Not her car. Just Wikipedia Accord. Pretty much the same thing.

A friend is moving from here in San Antonio to Troy, NY in February. Circumstances dictate that she can’t drive it. She wanted to ship her 2004 Accord (sedan, 5MT, under 100k miles) with her, but the quotes that she’s received so far of $1500 and $2800 have her ready to just sell it here and buy a new car when she gets there. This seemed pretty high to me, but maybe I’m just out of touch. I’d hate to see her dump this car for less than it’s worth in the moving rush. Does anyone have a better idea of what this kind of transport should cost and any recommended transporters to call?

An 04 Accord 5MT is likely an LX, so it’s probably not worth a whole lot anyway...I’d sell it and buy a new car in NY.

One of my friends had his car shipped from California to Chicago for about $1500. It is a lot of money but given the trouble of selling and buying a car on short notice, it might be the better option.

The thought has crossed my mind. Not sure I have the time though.

Not much. But the miles are low so it might grab a few thousand. Just enough to make the decision difficult.

Moving to Troy, NY is ill-advised at this time. Maybe in May when the snow has finally melted... but you aren’t going to find a rust-free ‘04 car within 100 miles of there, so you are probably on the right path with moving the one you have. I’d keep searching the internet for a “uship” or “auto transport” for $750-$1000 flatbed or car-carrier option. Driving it there will cost you a one-way plane ticket + gas (say $500 total) but you are going to burn 4-5 days (2000 miles) which might not be feasible. Selling it certainly is an option, but buying an equivalent replacement in the Troy/Albany/Schenectady area might be. Full disclosure - I own the ‘00, an ‘03 and and ‘07 Honda (so I know the value of a 100k vintage, it’s barely broken in!) and I spent ~5 frosty years living in Troy more than a few years ago. Good luck and here’s Norman Rockwell’s image of Troy for your viewing pleasure. It hasn’t changed much in the last 100 years.

I dabbled in the auto transport business a bit back in the 2007ish timeframe when I was between careers, owned a one-ton dually and had access to a 52-foot, 3-4 car hauler. Most of what I did was specialty stuff (race cars, classic cars) and on short notice, but my rates worked out to usually more than $2/mile back in 2007. Even for the big, national carriers who operate on dedicated lanes, dropping off and picking up cars along way, and trying to undercut each other by pennies per miles, I would expect it to cost in the ballpark of a least a dollar per mile plus some amount for pickup and drop off.

The most likely way to get it put there cheap might be UShip. If you can find a hot shot driver with some extra room on his flatbed, and who is going that way at the right time, they might offer to take it along with them for a song just to get a little extra revenue. The catch to trying to snag a deal like that is that kind of deal tends to come together pretty last minute.

I’d back up the plan of finding someone reliable to drive it there for her.

Ditto your comment. If money is important, and your time is important, keeping that car is cheap vs trying to buy the same car in Troy.

I just looked at autotrader. It looks like it will take about $6000 to get an equivalent Accord in Troy. 115k miles, Example - 2005 $6117. This was my search.
